Behind the Scenes: Samsung Chef Collection

Check out a behind-the-scenes peek from our own Alex Bates, VP, Paper Engineering & Design. He wrote about the process and inspiration behind one of our fave packaging projects done in collaboration with TracyLocke for Samsung’s Chef Collection, a suite of high-end appliances.

“What do you know about wood?”

That’s what marketing agency TracyLocke asked us when we began this project, which was to create a wooden package design that could also be repurposed into a kitchen helper.

Our focus was to deliver a premium to Samsung’s Chef Collection customers. One of the benefits to buying the collection was that customers would receive a Samsung tablet pre-loaded with recipes and cooking-related applications along with a cutting board that could be used at home in the kitchen.

Instead of focusing on the packaging we focused on the product. This is where the fun began.

We worked closely with the TracyLocke team and our wood manufacturer, Lakeshore Display, to create a substantial wood block that would hold the tablet during shipment and present itself as part of the cutting board once received. We also designed a detachable faceplate to hold the tablet so that aspiring chefs could view the recipes while cutting food on the maple butcher block surface.

The packaging of the block and tablet followed the same clean, modern aesthetic as all of the packaging we design and manufacture for Samsung: luxurious and high end.
